Sunrise commences demonstration with Satellite Connect Europe
Demonstration will focus on the integration of satellite functionality with existing 4G and 5G networks
March 2 2026 – Sunrise is working with Satellite Connect Europe to determine how open access direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity service can complement terrestrial networks and contribute to improved continuity of service in Switzerland.
Throughout the work with Sunrise, the integration of satellite capabilities with the current 4G and 5G networks of Sunrise will be evaluated. The ambition is to enable smartphones to transition between mobile and satellite signals in areas with limited or no coverage, supporting seamless connectivity for consumers, businesses, and public services.
The Satellite Connect Europe approach of giving European-operated access to AST SpaceMobile satellites ensures that network operations, data handling and service control remain firmly within the European jurisdiction. This infrastructure is designed to support direct-to-device services that integrate seamlessly with existing mobile networks and support existing consumer devices with no need for an upgrade.
Satellite Connect Europe is already working closely with European MNOs to support their efforts to introduce satellite-enabled mobile connectivity that complements terrestrial coverage. The approach will maximise the impact of MSS (Mobile Satellite Services) Spectrum across Europe.
